Description
PRAZIMOX
(suspension for oral use)
Description
Suspension from white to grayish color with a specific odor of the constituent components.
Composition
1 ml of the preparation contains active ingredients:
moxidectin – 0.5 mg;
praziquantel – 10 mg.
Excipients: xanthan gum, potassium sorbate, bentonite, glycerin, purified water.
Pharmacological properties
ATCvet QP52, anthelmintic veterinary preparations (QP52AA51, praziquantel, combinations).
Moxidectin is a semi-synthetic compound of the milbemycin group (macrocyclic lactones), active against larvae and imago of nematodes. It stimulates the release of GABA, increases the permeability of membranes for chlorine ions, which suppresses the electrical activity of the nerve cells of helminths, causes disruption of nerve innervation, paralysis and death of parasites.
Moxidectin is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, enters the systemic circulation and is distributed in the organs and tissues of the animal’s body, especially concentrating in adipose tissue; excreted from the body mainly unchanged, mainly with feces.
Praziquantel is a pyrazinisoquinoline derivative that acts on most types of cestodes and trematodes at all stages of development. The mechanism of action consists of depolarization of neuromuscular ganglia, disruption of glucose transport and microtubular function in cestodes and trematodes, which leads to paralysis and death of parasites and promotes their excretion from the animal’s body.
Praziquantel is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, reaching its maximum concentration in the blood plasma after 1-3 hours, and is distributed in the organs and tissues of the animal’s body. It is partially released back into the intestinal lumen, making it effective against parasites in the intestinal wall. It is almost completely metabolized in the liver and excreted within 24 hours mainly in the urine.
The combination of active substances that make up the drug provides a wide range of anthelmintic action against larval and sexually mature forms of intestinal nematodes (Toxocara canis, Toxocara cati, Toxascaris leonina, Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma tubaeforme, Uncinaria stenocephala, Trichuris vulpis), larval forms of pulmonary nematodes Angiostrongylus vasorum, Crenosoma vulpis, larval forms (microdirofilariae) nematodes Dirofilaria immitis; cestodes (Taenia spp., Dipylidum caninum, Mesocestoides spp., Echinococcus granulosis and Echinococcus multilocularis), trematodes (Opisthorchis spp.).
Usage
Therapeutic and prophylactic deworming of dogs and cats with nematodes, cestodoses, trematodes, mixed invasions; prevention of dirofilariasis.
Dosage
Shake the bottle thoroughly before each use.
The preparation is administered to animals individually orally, preferably in the morning hours of feeding with a small amount of food or injected forcibly onto the root of the tongue using a syringe-dispenser at the rate of: 0.5 ml of the drug per 1 kg of animal body weight (which corresponds to a therapeutic concentration of 0.25 mg of moxidectin and 5 mg of praziquantel per 1 kg of animal body weight).
For therapeutic purposes, deworming of animals is carried out twice with an interval of 10-14 days.
For prophylactic purposes, the drug is used once every 3 months, as well as 10-14 days before each vaccination.
To prevent dirofilariasis in disease-prone regions, the preparation is used in the spring, summer and autumn period: once before the mosquito flight starts, then once a month and finally a month after the end of the flight of the insects.
The use of the preparation does not require a preliminary starvation diet and the introduction of laxatives.
Contraindications
Increased individual sensitivity of animals to the components of the preparation.
Do not use the preparation in animals with infectious diseases, weak and emaciated animals.
Do not use the preparation in puppies up to 3 weeks of age, kittens up to 6 weeks of age and animals weighing less than 0.5 kg.
Do not use the preparation simultaneously with other antiparasitic agents containing macrocyclic lactones, piperazine and cholinesterase inhibiting drugs.
Cautions
Deworming of pregnant and lactating females, if necessary, should be carried out under the supervision of a veterinarian.
Some dogs are more sensitive to macrocyclic lactones due to a mutation in the MDR1 gene. Although such animals tolerate moxidectin better than ivermectin, it is recommended to use the drug under the supervision of a veterinarian for dogs of the collie, sheltie, bobtail and related breeds, due to the increased sensitivity of these breeds to macrocyclic lactones.
For animals with impaired liver and kidney function, the drug is prescribed with caution.
Some animals may experience disturbances in the work of the gastrointestinal tract (loose stools, vomiting), profuse salivation (especially in cats), which disappear on their own and do not require the use of drugs.
In case of increased individual sensitivity to the components of the drug and the manifestation of allergic reactions, the use of the drug is discontinued and remedies for symptomatic therapy are prescribed.
